WASHINGTON – Mid-Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee is calling on Secretary of State John Kerry to free Amir Hekmati.
On Thursday, Kildee sent a letter to Kerry, signed by more than 100 other lawmakers, urging the U.S. Department of State to “prioritize” attaining Hekmati’s release.
Hekmati, a former Marine who grew up in Genesee County, holds both U.S. and Iranian passports. He has been in Iranian custody for more than a year-and-a-half, following a trip to visit his grandmothers. Iran claims Hekmati is a U.S. spy, but his family and the U.S. government deny that.
Kildee joined ABC12’s Washington correspondent Ted Fioraliso to discuss this latest push for Hekmati’s release.
