Houses passes bill aimed at improving pubic education

WASHINGTON – The school year may be ending soon, but Congress is taking steps to make sure public education is the best it can be for all students. Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA) is part of that fight.

“We need to re-think the model for education,” Thompson said.

He and his colleagues in the House of Representatives, recently passed the Success and Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act. That is legislation aimed at helping students across the country, by implementing some charter school practices in other public schools.

“It will allow us to take those innovations that we find work, and put them into the traditional public schools,” Thompson said. “To me, that’s incredibly important.”

The bill would also provide grants for state entities, to expand and replicate high-quality charter schools. Thompson said that will start to improve the country’s education system.

“The traditional model really focuses on kids, elementary and secondary education and that’s extremely important and we’ve got a long way to go with that,” he said.

But Thompson said it is also important to focus on students after graduation, and thanks to an amendment that Thompson co-authored in the Success and Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act, career counseling will be a factor when deciding what organizations will receive grants.

The bill passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support in the House, and was recently introduced in the Senate.
